“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.”

And there are many others. The great villains of the screen, whether in cinema or television, are more than mustache-twirling clichés, they are nuanced, complex characters with as much depth as the heroes they antagonize.

That, along with the immense charm Giancarlo brings to the role, is why Gus was such a brilliant character. That glimpse into his past gave him layers of humanity that made him compelling in a way other TV bad guys aren’t. He’s a different kind of complex than Walt. Walt lies to himself about his motivations, but it's clear to the viewer that his whole "I want to support my family" justification is a farce. With Gus, on the other hand, there is no ambiguity in his motivations both for the audience and for himself. He knows exactly who he is and what he is capable of. The man was a remorseless murderer who killed for selfish reasons.

Yet we can’t help but be drawn in by him, and not simply because he’s such a charming man. Rather, it’s because his selfishness is not rooted in greed or a flawed ego that needs massaging, but in something we can all relate to: lost love.
